Using libraries for research

2025.10.24

Utilizing local libraries can be an excellent way of conducting research overseas. Public institutions like national and state libraries may house specialized materials and historically valuable documents.
While you may need to make a reservation in advance to view these materials, a librarian will usually be ready to assist with searching for materials and navigating procedures. There are also university libraries with extensive archives in specific fields.

During our research in Los Angeles, for example, we visited the library at the University of California, Riverside, to view written materials and photographs from about 100 years ago of artists who had lived and worked in California at the time. On making an initial inquiry by email, we received detailed guidance on how to search the databases and about the necessary procedures for viewing the materials. This service, including access to the materials themselves, was also provided free of charge.

Note that terms of use and required procedures will differ from one library to another. You can find basic information on the library’s website, so check that first, and if you still have questions, contact the library by email.

Point!

To use a library for research, check their access policies and procedures in advance.
