Starting point

2024.08

The three curators from Japan were chosen through an open call for applications. All the curators and mentors joined an online meeting to match up based on their respective expertise and interests. Arai Yasuhiro (Curator, Shiga Museum of Art) was assigned to collaborate with The Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW), in Sydney.

Arai had many online meetings with the AGNSW curator, Melanie Eastburn. At their first meeting, Eastburn and Arai exchanged information about their museums and the exhibitions that they have curated. After that, Arai considered which emerging Japanese artists to propose as candidates for the project. With advice from program mentor, Kataoka Mami, he then prepared a presentation in English to propose a number of candidate artists.

Eastburn came to Japan and visited the Shiga Museum of Art. She met with museum director and program mentor Hosaka Kenjiro for a conversation about the museum's mission and collection, and then Arai guided her on a tour of the museum's special and permanent exhibitions. Eastburn also examined a variety of Japanese contemporary art works at museums and galleries in Tokyo and Kyoto, and discussed the candidate artists with Arai.

After considering and refining the list of candidate artists through a series of online meetings, ultimately Endo Kaori was selected as the artist.

2025.02

Endo and Arai met in person for the first time at a meeting in Tokyo, when they shared information about AGNSW and considered the direction of Endo's work. Afterwards, they connected online to learn about the history and culture of Australia, and they considered which places they should visit for their research.

Research

2025.04

Endo and Arai visited Australia for a 10-day period of research. In addition to Sydney, they also visited Canberra, where the National Museum of Australia is located, and Brisbane, where the 11th Asia Pacific Triennale was held. At AGNSW, they had the opportunity to speak with many curators besides Eastburn, including its director, Maud Page, and they exchanged information about contemporary art in Japan and Australia.
