Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM]

The Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media, commonly known as YCAM, is an art center located in Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, run by the Yamaguchi City Foundation for Cultural Promotion. Designed by architect Isozaki Arata, it opened in 2003 as a cultural complex incorporating facilities such as theater, gallery, cinema and the city’s central library. YCAM has made “creating together, learning together” its basic philosophy, bringing together local citizens and experts from various fields and emphasizing the creation of original works incorporating media technology. Artists, researchers and engineers from Japan and abroad have produced and presented a broad array of works including installation and performance pieces during residencies here. YCAM’s internal research and development team, YCAM InterLab, has a staff with a large variety of skills, including educators, designers and engineers.
