Tsukamoto Mari

Curator, The Museum of Art, Kochi

Born in Osaka in 1989, Tsukamoto is based in Kochi.

She completed a master’s program in conservation at the Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts in 2014 and has been in her current position since 2016.
With her knowledge of conservation and restoration, she looks at the question of what we should be sure to preserve, and in her curation practice she strives to make the most of the regional and other characteristics of specific exhibition venues. At the Museum of Art, Kochi, she launched ARTIST FOCUS in 2020 as a solo exhibition series featuring artists with ties to Kochi and in 2022 she curated a retrospective for artist Goda Sawako, who was from Kochi Prefecture. She is also actively involved in projects outside of the museum, and she has curated numerous self-organized exhibitions mounted by young and established artists. With a focus on “expression that can only emerge from this place” in light of the history and culture of the exhibition location, Tsukamoto puts the artists’ practices in a local context, sharing this with the world.
