Shiga Museum of Art

Shiga Museum of Art is a prefectural art museum located in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. The museum opened as the Museum of Modern Art, Shiga in 1984, and after a renovation it reopened as the Shiga Museum of Art in 2021. The museum is located in the lush natural setting of the Biwako Cultural Park, and a glass-walled corridor faces a garden that is dotted with sculptures. It boasts a collection of about 2,800 works. In particular, the collections of works by Japanese painter Ogura Yuki and textile artist Shimura Fukumi are among the best in the country. In addition to its collections of Shiga-related art and crafts and of postwar American and Japanese contemporary art, a collection of Art Brut works was added as a new feature in 2016. Since it first opened, the museum has been in the vanguard of educational outreach efforts, such as dialogue-based visual thinking and the use of games to teach art appreciation.
