CAM - Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian

Located in Portugal’s capital city of Lisbon, CAM - Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian (Modern Art Centre) - is located on the campus of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, established in 1956, and whose purpose is to promote the development of individuals and organisations, through art, science, education, and charity, for a more equitable and sustainable society. CAM was inaugurated in 1983, to house a permanent display of a collection of more than 12,000 pieces of modern and contemporary art - primarily by Portuguese artists, and to present ambitious projects in all media by emerging and confirmed artists alike. It reopened in 2024 further to complete redesign by Kuma Kengo, which also includes a new Garden by Vladimir Djurovic. In keeping with the architecture of the building, which was inspired by Japanese engawa, or verandas, the museum mounted Engawa: A Season of Contemporary Art from Japan (2023–2024), the most ambitious presentation of Japanese Contemporary Art in the country.
