The Art Gallery of New South Wales

The Art Gallery of New South Wales, located in the heart of Sydney, is Australia's preeminent public art museum. The museum was started by a citizens' group established in 1871, and it opened as the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1880. The Naala Nura building (‘seeing Country’ in a local Aboriginal language) was erected in 1909, and the Naala Badu building (‘seeing waters’), designed by SANAA (Sejima Kazuyo and Nishizawa Ryue), opened in 2022. The Art Gallery’s permanent collection comprises more than 37,000 works, including many pieces of Asian art that have been collected since the end of the nineteenth century. It actively works to introduce contemporary artists from Japan and other Asian countries to Australia. The museum also has an extensive collection—said to be one of the largest in Australia—of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art from various periods.
